going, going, gone

his fragrance filled the air, then my mind began to go…

Some songs begin with a melody. This one began with a single line that I wrote down years ago: “His fragrance filled the air.” It stayed with me because it captured something I hadn’t found any other way to describe.
.

Scent has a way of bypassing logic. It doesn’t ask permission before it pulls you backward. For a brief moment, the past feels completely present again — not as a memory you’re choosing to revisit, but as something that simply arrives.
.

When I returned to this poem, I didn’t want to explain it away. I wanted to preserve that feeling of uncertainty. Is it grief? Longing? Love? Regret? Maybe it’s all of those things at once. The lyrics leave space for the listener to decide.
.

Musically, I imagined an arrangement that felt almost haunted — not frightening, but quietly inhabited by memory. The spaces between the notes became just as important as the notes themselves, allowing the song to breathe and linger the way a familiar fragrance does after someone has already left the room.
.

Like many of my songs, this one asks more questions than it answers. Sometimes that’s the most honest place a song can live.
.

You can listen to “going, going, gone” in the Music Catalog or on SoundCloud.
