not on the page
Twenty-three years together. A lifetime of memories. And a stack of legal documents explaining how to divide everything we built.
Everything, apparently, except the things that mattered most.
"not on the page" was born from the experience of receiving the final paperwork to end my marriage. Page after page detailed how our possessions would be divided, how finances would be settled, and how two lives that had been intertwined for more than two decades would become separate.
But nowhere did it say who gets the Christmas mornings. The laughter in the kitchen. The memories. Or the people we were when loving each other was easy.
And then, just as I thought I'd finished grieving the life we'd shared and the futures we'd imagined, a series of conversations opened a door I hadn't been looking for.
For a few days, I began imagining something entirely new. Not a return to our old marriage, but the possibility of two people rediscovering each other, dating again, living separately, and building a different kind of life together.
I was working out the details of a future we'd never tried.
And then I learned that what I'd understood as a possibility had only been thoughts spoken aloud.
You were wondering out loud.
I was building one inside.
Suddenly, I found myself grieving again. Not for the marriage I'd already mourned, but for a future I hadn't even known to dream about until those conversations gave it shape.
I didn't know there was another goodbye left in us.
This song is about that unexpected grief. About the vulnerability of allowing yourself to hope again, the pain of feeling foolish for believing, and ultimately, refusing to let someone else's interpretation diminish the meaning of what you experienced.
The accompanying video explores the distance between what can be documented and what can only be remembered — the life we shared, the future I briefly imagined, and the quiet reality of finding myself alone with the papers again.
Because a marriage can be legally dissolved. Possessions can be divided. Financial obligations can be calculated.
But there are things no document can measure, divide, or take away.
Some things will never be on the page.
